Toilet Cisterns & Frames

In-wall cisterns and frames are what make a wall hung toilet possible. The frame is a steel structure fixed into the wall framing that carries the entire load of the pan and whoever is sitting on it. The cistern sits inside it, concealed, with only the flush plate visible.

The appeal is obvious: no visible cistern, no pipework, and a floor that runs unbroken under the pan. It makes a small bathroom feel considerably larger and removes the awkward area behind a conventional toilet that is impossible to clean properly.

The constraint is sequencing. The frame has to be positioned, levelled and fixed into solid framing before the wall is lined and tiled. That means deciding on a wall hung toilet early in the project, not partway through. Retrofitting into a finished wall means stripping it back to framing.

Servicing is a common concern and a reasonable one. Good systems are designed so that everything requiring maintenance, the inlet valve and the flush mechanism, is reachable through the flush plate aperture without opening the wall. Check that this is the case before buying any concealed system, because the cheap ones are not.

Compatibility matters. Pans, frames and flush plates are not universally interchangeable between manufacturers. Confirm that the pan you want will mount to the frame you are buying, ideally by purchasing them together.
