Shower Mixers

A shower mixer controls temperature and flow from a single handle, which is why they have almost entirely replaced separate hot and cold taps. The mechanism inside is a ceramic disc cartridge, and its quality is the main thing separating a mixer that works smoothly for fifteen years from one that becomes stiff and starts dripping.

The critical specification in New Zealand is water pressure. Low pressure and unequal pressure systems are still common in older housing, and a mixer built for mains pressure will underperform badly on one. The symptom is a shower that trickles regardless of how the valve is set. Check what system your house runs before specifying anything, and if you are unsure, look for a header tank in the ceiling space.

Consider whether you want a standard mixer or a thermostatic one. A thermostatic valve holds the set temperature even when another outlet in the house draws water, which stops the shower running suddenly hot or cold when someone flushes a toilet or starts the washing machine. In a busy household it is worth the difference.

Wall mounted mixers require the plumbing to be set out before lining and tiling, so decide early. Retrofitting to an existing wall means opening it up.
