Tapware

Tapware does more to set the character of a bathroom than almost anything else in it, and it is the item people most often regret buying cheap. A basin mixer gets used several times a day for fifteen or twenty years. The difference between a good cartridge and a poor one shows up as a handle that stays smooth versus one that becomes stiff and starts weeping within a couple of years.

The most important technical consideration in New Zealand is water pressure. Many older homes still run low pressure or unequal pressure systems, and a mixer designed for mains pressure will deliver a disappointing trickle on one of them regardless of how good the fitting is. Check what system you have before specifying anything. If you are unsure, the presence of a header tank in the ceiling space is the usual indicator of low pressure.

Specify the whole room at once. Tapware, shower hardware, towel rails, robe hooks and roll holders all sit in the same visual field, and buying them piecemeal over several months almost always produces a mismatch that is obvious once it is installed.
