Heated Towel Bars

A heated towel bar is the compact option where a full ladder rail would take over the wall. Single and double bar configurations mount in the space you would otherwise use for an ordinary towel rail, and they do the job of drying a towel between uses while taking the edge off the humidity in the room.

Single bars suit ensuites, powder rooms and any bathroom used by one person. Double bars handle two towels comfortably and are the sensible default for a shared bathroom where a ladder will not fit. If you regularly have three or more towels to dry, look at a ladder instead, because overlapping towels on a bar dry slowly and defeat the purpose.

Wattage sits in the low range, typically 50 to 100 watts depending on the model. That is cheap enough to leave running permanently, which is how they work best. A bar that is switched on for an hour after a shower dries the surface of a towel. One that runs continuously keeps the whole bathroom drier and reduces the conditions mould needs to establish.

Installation requires a hardwired connection in most cases. Plan the electrical point before tiling if you can, because retrofitting to a finished wall means either surface conduit or lifting tiles. Mount the bar where the towel will hang clear of the wall rather than pressed against it, since airflow around the towel is what does the drying.
