Frameless Shower Hinges

Hinges are the most important component in a frameless shower. With no frame carrying the load, the entire weight of a toughened glass door, which can be twenty kilograms or more, transfers through the hinges into the wall or into the adjoining panel. A hinge that is underspecified or corroding is not a cosmetic problem, it is a structural one.

Selection starts with the geometry, not the swing. Wall to glass hinges fix to a solid wall on one side and clamp the glass on the other. Glass to glass hinges join a door to a fixed panel. The angle you need, 90, 135 or 180 degrees, is determined by how those two surfaces meet each other, not by which way you want the door to open. A 180 degree hinge joins a door to a panel that sits in the same plane. A 90 degree hinge joins surfaces meeting at a right angle.

All the hinges we carry are rated for 8mm and 10mm toughened glass, which covers essentially every frameless installation in New Zealand.

When replacing, check the existing cutout in the glass. Most frameless hinges clamp onto a machined notch, and the notch dimensions must match the replacement. Toughened glass cannot be re-machined, so if the new hinge does not match the cutout you will need a new panel.
