Basins

The basin sets the character of a vanity more than the cabinet does, because it is at eye level and it is the part people actually interact with.

There are three main mounting styles. A countertop basin sits entirely above the surface, which makes it a visual feature and gives you the widest choice of shapes and materials. The trade-off is a joint around the base that needs cleaning, and a higher overall rim height, so check the finished height suits the people using it, particularly children. An under mount basin sits below the benchtop with the surface overhanging the rim, which lets you wipe the top straight into the bowl and is the easiest to keep clean. A drop-in sits in a cutout with its rim resting on the surface, which is the simplest to install and replace.

Choose the basin before ordering a vanity top, because the cutout is machined to the specific bowl. Doing it the other way round limits you to whatever fits the hole.

Also consider bowl depth against your water pressure and tap choice. A shallow, wide bowl looks elegant but will splash badly under a high flow tap, which is a daily annoyance that is hard to fix afterwards.
